Abstract

The article is devoted to the semantic and functional analysis of verbs of movement in space based on the work of P. L. Travers "Mary Poppins". The main attention is focused on the study of the semantic structure of these verbs, their functions in the text and their role in the formation of the artistic space of the work. In the process of analysis, the methods of lexical and semantic analysis, contextual analysis and elements of the cognitive approach are used.
Verbs of movement in space are considered as an important element that ensures the dynamics of the plot and forms a spatial picture in the reader's mind. Particular attention is paid to such aspects as the direction and nature of movement, their symbolic load and connection with the psychological states of the characters. The article demonstrates that the use of these verbs in the text affects the creation of an atmosphere of fairy tales, emphasizes the individuality of the heroes and their worldview. Attention is focused on the role of these verbs in reflecting the dynamics of events, the development of characters and the creation of a magical atmosphere in the work.
The article also examines the functional variability of verbs of movement in different narrative situations. The classification is carried out into the following categories: verbs describing the mode of movement (e.g. speed, means of transportation, and direction of movement, including ascent, descent, or rotation); verbs describing the nature of movement (e.g. translational, oscillatory, or rotational movement); and verbs describing the sphere of movement (e.g. movement on land, water, or air).
