Abstract

This article explores the use of various linguistic resources in Erich Maria Remarque's "Three Comrades," which is considered part of the "Golden Heritage of 20th-century World Literature." Although this book was written almost a century ago, the author succeeds in vividly portraying both the tragedy and the beauty of such interpersonal relationships as disappointment, love, and friendship.
Through the deliberate use of epithets, metaphors, similes, and other lexical and stylistic features, Remarque illustrates the full drama of the "lost generation." In our study, we have emphasized the importance and timeless relevance of language as a reflection of the deepest emotions. We have deliberately focused on those feelings that are of crucial importance in tragic times: love, friendship, and, unfortunately, disappointment.
The result of our research is a diagram that visually depicts the quantitative proportions of each stylistic and lexical device in the novel's depiction of love, friendship, and disappointment. The authors deliberately focused on three central emotions, as they reflect the deepest and most essential feelings of the "lost generation"–a topic that, unfortunately, remains relevant even after almost 100 years.
This research also analyzes and presents the versatility of the German language, providing students and other interested parties with a deeper and more multifaceted approach to the language. The results of this study can be applied in teaching German as a second foreign language to fourth- and fifth-year students.
