The article clarifies the significance of traditional and transformed phraseology for forming students’ language competence in the journalism specialty of higher education institutions during the study of the course “Modern Ukrainian Language of Mass Media”. It is noted that in linguistics, research into various aspects of phraseology is relevant. The ability to use phraseological units appropriately, a comprehensive range of such units, additional connotations, stylistic functions, the ability to form semantically and stylistically transformed stable combinations of words and actively use them in journalistic materials testify to a high level of linguistic competence of a specialist. It is emphasized that the formation of stable skills and abilities to use phraseological units in future professional activity is one of the tasks of a lector. The system of knowledge about phraseological units enables adequate verbal communication in professional speech, improves linguistic culture, contributes to the development of skills to apply not only standard but also creatively modified phraseological units in various stylistic and genre texts for the sake of a stylistic effect or to achieve other author’s goals. The article examines the main techniques of structural-semantic transformation and methods of their combination, which should be introduced to students by the teacher. Practical recommendations and original, creative tasks are proposed using the latest illustrative material, which are intended for both classes in modern Ukrainian media language.
