Abstract

The article focuses on the study of the peculiarities of forming scientific and professional communication skills in English for students of higher education institutions. The relevance of the problem under study is emphasised in the modern integration of Ukrainian education into international educational and scientific cooperation. A review of the latest works of Ukrainian and foreign scholars related to the research issues is carried out. The theoretical foundations of scientific and professional communication are outlined. The importance of English as an instrument of scientific and professional activity is stressed. Modern methodological approaches to forming skills in the studied category of interaction are considered. The communicative approach is identified as the leading one in modern language teaching. It is found that implementing this approach involves using authentic materials and interactive tools, as well as modelling professional situations. Subject and language-integrated teaching is considered an effective means of forming scientific and professional communication skills, as both linguistic and professional competence are formed simultaneously. The project methodology’s relevance is emphasised, allowing students to integrate professional knowledge with foreign language practice by carrying out interdisciplinary communication projects aimed at solving scientific and professional problems. The effectiveness of the case method, which involves solving realistic problem situations in English that model typical tasks in an academic or professional environment, is emphasised. The practical aspects of developing scientific and professional communication skills in English are considered, including digital sources (online platforms, educational resources). Further prospects for the research of the problem are outlined, namely, an empirical study within the framework for a specific methodological approach to developing scientific and professional communication skills in English for higher education students.
