HYBRIDIZATION OF SHORT-FORM GENRES IN MODERN ENGLISH SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE: INTERDISCURSIVE AND VALORATIVE ASPECTS

Abstract

The paper studies transformations of short-form scientific genres (SSG) within the context of academic communication digitalization. The paper analyzes two representative groups of SSG: Research Highlights and Research Posts from the LinkedIn network. The theoretical framework of the research aligns with the principles of J. Swales’ classical genre analysis; simultaneously, the work demonstrates further development of V. Bhatia’s concept of interdiscursivity and Hyland’ concept of authorial stance based on new empirical material.
It is established that SSG functioning is driven by the process of genre hybridization, during which the academic discourse integrates tools of media and advertising discourses. The results validate interdiscursivity as a key feature of Research Highlights, which is represented through radical semantic compression and nominalization adapting scientific content for non-linear “navigational” reading.
The study proves that a LinkedIn Research Post emerges as an autonomous interdiscursive phenomenon, where institutional objectivity yields to authorial stance. Valorative semantics is identified as the primary value category in small-scale scholarly genres that is realized through egocentric subject forms, evaluative lexis, and ideographic symbols (emojis), which serve as markers of significance and dialogicity in the scientific text.
The authors conclude that hybridization of SSGs is a strategic tool for “revitalizing” scientific knowledge, where the integration of news semantics and promotional advertising strategies ensures social relevance of scientific facts within the global information flow. Future research prospects are associated with studying the impact of digital platform algorithms on the further visualization and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
