THE UNIQUENESS OF THE BORDERLAND AND ITS INFLUENCE ON CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL PROCESSES

Abstract

This article examines the cultural dimensions of the ­borderland phenomenon as a multidimensional ­sociocultural, symbolic, and anthropological space that cannot be ­reduced solely to geographical or geopolitical dimensions. The relevance of this study stems from the transformation of contemporary notions of territory, borders, identity, and intercultural interaction. In the context of globalization, ­migration processes, and intensifying cultural contacts, the borderland emerges not as a peripheral zone but as a productive analytical category for understanding key processes in the modern world. The aim of this article is to conceptualize the borderland as a cultural phenomenon within which the encounter, interaction, tension, and interpenetration of various cultural systems take place. The borderland is examined as a space where specific models of communication, group consciousness, local solidarity, and openness to the Other are formed. Particular attention is paid to the fact that a border territory not only denotes the space near a state border but also encompasses broader social, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and existential intersections. The article analyzes two dominant paradigms for understanding borderlands: the first, which emphasizes their autonomy and uniqueness, and the second, which interprets borderlands as parts of broader political, historical, and power configurations. Separately, the connection between borderlands, postcolonialism, transnationalism, and transcultural identity is substantiated. It is demonstrated that borderlands create the conditions for a nonviolent, dialogical perception of the Other, contrasting with colonial models of domination, assimilation, and symbolic subordination. It is concluded that the borderland is not a marginal space, but a kind of laboratory in which new forms of coexistence, cultural adaptation, communication, and identity self-determination are developed.
